Version status

Version 1.0 is currently available on the App Store with Find Ballast and the Density Calculator. Version 1.1 is being tested and adds the optional Saved Gear feature described below. Its details may change before release.

Quick help

  1. Enter the water conditions where the complete configured object was last neutral.
  2. Enter the object's dry weight.
  3. Enter the target conditions or choose an illustrative surface preset.
  4. Read the estimated ballast to add or remove.

Saved Gear (version 1.1)

In versions that include Saved Gear, you can save a reusable neutral reference with an object name, dry weight, optional setup notes, and up to three photos. Select a saved profile and choose “Plan a new dive” to load its locked reference values into the Plan tab. Reset unloads the profile without deleting it.

Saved profiles and resized photo copies stay only in Ballast Finder's local app storage. Delete a profile from its detail page if you no longer need it.

Suitable equipment

Use Ballast Finder only for complete rigid objects whose external volume does not change appreciably with depth, such as underwater scooters, sealed rigid camera housings, or rigid cargo containers.

Do not use it for neoprene, BCDs, suits, lift bags, flooded equipment, flexible trapped-gas spaces, or other compressible objects.

Understanding presets and results

Water presets are rounded examples, not live or site-specific observations. Actual conditions vary with location, season, weather, and depth. Verify the entered conditions before using the estimate.

Results are estimates. Verify equipment in controlled water, follow normal diving procedures and training, and do not rely on the app alone for safety-critical decisions.
